Common questions

How is a word scored?

Points × Ink. Points come from the word's length and each tile's value; Ink grows with length. Dingbats, typefaces and finished tiles add to both. The preview above your composing stick shows the score before you print.

Why wasn't my word accepted?

The dictionary has about 84,000 words of 2 to 10 letters. Two- and three-letter words have to be everyday ones, and names, abbreviations and offensive words never count. Q always comes with its U, on a single Qu tile. On a deadline page, the red banner says what else is off limits that page.

Does the order of my dingbats matter?

Yes. They score left to right, so put the ones that add Ink before the ones that multiply it. Tap a dingbat to move it left or right, or to sell it.

What do Rummage and Shuffle do?

Rummage swaps tiles: put the ones you don't want in the composing stick and tap Rummage. You get three a page. Shuffle just rearranges your rack, which can help you spot a word. It's free.

Can I get rid of a supply without using it?

Yes. Tap it and choose Sell. You get back half its price and the slot frees up. Dingbats sell the same way.

How do I unlock the other dingbats and paper stocks?

Eight dingbats unlock through milestones, which you can track in the Specimen Book. Winning a run on a paper stock unlocks the next, harder one, from Newsprint up to Parchment.

When does the Daily Edition change?

At midnight where you are. Everyone gets the same tiles, shop and deadlines that day, and you get one go at it.

I printed the whole book. Now what?

Tap Keep printing for endless chapters with bigger targets, or start a new run on the next paper stock.

Where is my progress saved?

Only on your phone. Deleting the app deletes your progress, and Erase all progress in Settings starts you fresh. See the privacy policy for details.
